The disk space (which does not have to be confused with the bandwidth), is the amount of hard disk that has been assigned to you by the hosting company so that you can host your website. Actually your website is a collection of files, including HTML files, images, videos, audio, flash files, databases and other things. This same space, normally, is also used to host the necessary resources to make the web work, such as access logs, emails, installed programs or scripts.

The amount of disk space that is needed to host a website depends mainly on the type of site you want to create. It will not occupy the same, a website with only four pages and three photographs, that an online product store, with hundreds of movies and audio recordings.

  • Space for WEB hosting
  • Calculate your space needs.

If you have not yet created your website, but you have in mind the structure that you are going to create, it will be like a small children’s game.

Note: As a reference, so that we can make all numbers, I can indicate that 1 gigabyte (GB) is 1000 Megabytes (MB) and that 1 MegaByte (MB) is 1000 Kilobytes (KB)

An average html page has a size of 30 KB, so a 50-page website will occupy 1500KB or 1.5 MB. Then, if we calculate that each page will have 2 medium-sized photos (100KB), we have 100 photos that will occupy 10MB. We add 5 MB of margin for the needs of mail accounts, records, CSS files, Scripts and possible growth. Thus we obtain that our website of 50 pages with two images in each one and with email accounts, will not occupy 16.5 MB.

A blog created with wordpress, with a personalized theme, a hundred posts and some 60 images, occupies about 20MB. A basic wordpress installation occupies about 13MB of disk space. If a custom theme is placed, between 1 and 2 MB is added to the disk space. To this must be added the size of the Databases and the contracted services.

Multimedia Files

If the type of site you want to create, it will require you to incorporate sound files, photographs or video, although its size can vary greatly from the resolution, quality and compression technology used, you can have an estimate of the space that you are going to occupy with the following tables.

Audio file sizes : (MP3)

  • 1.5 hours = 42.3MB
  • 5.48 minutes = 8.02MB
  • 0.53 seconds = 263 KB

Examples of photo file sizes: (Resolution of 640 × 480)

  • 7990 photos = 1GB
  • 500 photos = 64 MB
  • 122 photos = 16 MB

Examples of video file sizes:

  • Movie 90 minutes .avi = a minimum of 700 MB (0.7GB)
  • 1 minute .avi movie, made with camera = 77 MB
  • Presentation of 2.5 minute photos in .wmv = 51MB

Do not be fooled by unlimited storage

We are looking at the products to hire a hosting service and finally we are carried away by that offer that is worth a little more, but that tells us that we have unlimited disk space. WOW! we can create a website where we have everything we want and share with our people our photos, favorite discographies, etc.

I’m sorry to tell you that it will not be like that! The normal thing is that when you offer unlimited space, just let you put the necessary things and related to the website, giving you an initial space, which will be increased in small sections once a day. This situation, (by experience) can be a real headache, if one day, your business, which is going very well, you need to incorporate many images for a Christmas campaign, leading you to have to wait several days or, if you run a lot Hurry, hire a superior package …

Conclusion

Now that you have the necessary knowledge, calculate the size of your website, add 20% of space, in anticipation of growth and contract. Do not be afraid because even if you fall short, most companies offer you the possibility of contracting more disk space.
